Cllr Memory Booysen was elected as the seventh Executive Mayor of Eden District Municipality (Eden DM), which is now known as Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM). Since the district’s establishment in 2001. Councillor Booysen will serve the district until 2021 and will provide strategic direction to GRDM.

He has a passion for people and a vast knowledge of how Local Government works. Booysen is responsible for identifying and developing criteria to place the district on a progressive path, as well as to implement strategies and programmes that will enhance service delivery.

Councillor Booysen was born in Hankey, Eastern Cape, on 28 June 1969. He is a father of three daughters and a husband to Estelle Booysen.  His father, John, passed on in 1980 and his mother, Buyiswa, resides in Kwanokuthula, Plettenberg Bay. Cllr Booysen continues to draws inspiration from his mother. She has always been a pillar of support to him.

Councillor Booysen matriculated from Humansdorp Secondary School in 1987 and studied for a Diploma in Education at the University of the Western Cape. He then went on to study Hotel Management at Wits Technikon.

He has worked in the hospitality industry for over a decade. His work in the hospitality industry made him a people’s person.  During 2002 he moved to the public sector, and during 2006, he was elected as a Bitou Ward Councillor. Five years later, he was elected as the Executive Mayor of Bitou Municipality. He finished his term at Bitou in 2016 and took office at GRDM, heading the district’s highest position – Executive Mayor.
